This exquisite lantern takes an octagonal beehive shape, which is often referred to as 'Versailles' shape, as it was based on an 18th Century model built for the Chateau of Versailles. The frame of the lantern is formed in ormolu, and the upper section of the lantern is surmounted by a crown. Below this is a circular ormolu section decorated with acathus leaf forms, shells and acorns, which leads to the main, octagonal body of the lantern which features rectangular panes of bevelled glass in four rows, held within an ormolu frame. The lower section of the lantern is mounted with lion masks and terminates with a pin finial.
