Late 19th c. Louis XVI Revival Giltwood Aubusson Tapestry Salon Suite | Canapé & Four Fauteuils circa 1885~1905 An exceptional Louis XVI Revival salon suite, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, comprising a matching canapé and four oval-back fauteuils, each upholstered in beautifully preserved Aubusson tapestry depicting romantic pastoral scenes. The finely carved giltwood frames embody the elegance of the Louis XVI style with oval backs, bead-and-reel molding, ribbon and floral cresting, gracefully scrolled arms, and fluted tapered legs. Over time, the original gilt finish has acquired a rich, warm patina, enhancing the suite's refined character while reflecting generations of careful use. Each fauteuil showcases a unique woven pastoral vignette surrounded by delicate floral garlands, while the canapé features larger coordinating scenes, creating a harmonious yet wonderfully varied ensemble. Woven in a sophisticated palette of warm ivory, soft blush, muted sage, dusty rose, and pale gold, the tapestry is further enriched by subtle ivory highlight threads that gently catch the light, lending remarkable depth and dimension that is even more captivating in person than photographs can convey. Equally impressive is the suite's remarkably intact traditional upholstery construction. Examination revealed hand-tied coil springs secured with natural jute twine beneath the original period dust cover, indicating that the suite retains what appears to be its original upholstery foundation. The seats remain generously rounded, resilient, and exceptionally comfortable, preserving the distinctive feel and craftsmanship of traditional upholstery rarely encountered today. Unlike many antique salon suites that have undergone extensive restoration or complete reupholstery, this exceptional example has remained largely untouched, offering collectors and designers an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a beautifully preserved suite with its original character and construction substantially intact. Whether placed in a grand foyer, formal living room, historic residence, luxury boutique, or designer interior, this elegant suite offers timeless sophistication and an undeniable sense of European craftsmanship.
