Cuban-born Clara Porset was a pioneer for modern design in Mexico. Having studied architecture in New York and then Paris, she finally settled in Mexico devoting her life to championing her mutually enriching vision of modernity and tradition. A fierce proponent of historical craft traditions, Clara Porset created wholly contemporary versions of the classic Mexican vernacular forms including the colonial butaque chair, itself a hybrid of Spanish and pre-Colombian archetypes. Despite others laying claim to its reinterpretations, Porset’s design for architect Luis Barragan’s houses are by far the most well-known and are what Luteca bases its pieces on. Working directly with UNAM (The National Autonomous University of Mexico) that holds the legacy to Clara Porset's archives, our design team meticulously studied the construction of original pieces to match her various forms and adaptations to offer truly unique pieces of iconic Mexican design.
