Low French Restoration Lounge Chair, 1840s

Chairish

$3,417

This low armchair dates back to around 1840 and comes from France. The chair was made during the French Restoration (Restauration) period. There is an interesting explanation why low chairs were produced in the 19th century. The low-slung design of classic Victorian slipper chairs for example allowed the mother who would have been wearing a stiff corset to interact with small children without bending over. In todays interior the low armchair is preferably used in front of fireplaces or just as a comfortable lounge chair in a living room setting. The armchair has an elegant plum veneer with yew wood flower marquetry inlays. It comes expertly refinished with a new upholstery and fabric. We also offer a pair of matching low chairs from the same provenance.
