Introducing a newly restored and incredibly rare 'Holiday' Series Lounge Chair designed by the incomparable Lawrence Peabody for the lauded Selig Danish Group. Designed and crafted in the 1950's this early icon of American Mid-Century Modern design now has a new lease on life making it ideal for designers and collectors alike searching for Peabody chair that is ready for a lifetime more of use. Reupholstered in a vintage-inspired heavy weave dove-grey fabric, this chair features new medium density foam for maximum comfort and longevity. Lawrence Peabody was born in 1924 in Massachusetts and was an iconic American architect and furniture designer producing He was known to be a flaming extrovert and was rarely reserved in his opinions. He had a clear love of design even choosing the Navy because he, "liked the uniforms". After serving in WWII he went on to study at the Rhode Island School of Design. At RISD he was heavily influenced by Ernst Lichtblau who was part of the Austrian Werbund. At the time there was a heavy Bauhaus influence due to many Europeans who had fled to the US for WWII. After RISD he "wandered" around Europe and ended up taking courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He then went on to become the lead designer for the Selig Furniture Co where he produced this 596 Lounge Chair among many other designs that are still in production today. The Selig Manufacturing Co was at the cutting edge of contemporary furniture during the mid 20th century. Selig Furniture was founded by Mendell Selig and Samuel Wexler in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1931. By the 1950s the company had grown to become one of America's leading importers and producers of contemporary furniture. The company focused on the high end designs being produced in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. Their product range epitomized the simple, elegant and airy forms typical of post-war Danish furniture design on display in this exquisite chair's aesthetic and form.
