“Solfjädern” (Sunfeather) lounge chair designed by Sonna Rosén in 1948 and produced by Nässjö Stolfabrik, Sweden, in the early 1950s.The Solfjädern chair is one of the most celebrated achievements of post-war Scandinavian design. Conceived as a modern interpretation of the traditional Windsor chair, the design combines exceptional comfort, visual lightness, and structural elegance. Its distinctive fan-shaped backrest, from which the chair takes its name, creates a sculptural silhouette while providing ergonomic support.Originally developed for retirement homes, the chair was designed to facilitate sitting down and standing up with ease. However, its refined proportions, lightweight construction, and remarkable comfort quickly led to widespread success in both private residences and public environments. The model became one of the few Swedish furniture designs to achieve significant international recognition during the 1950s.Sonna Rosén studied at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm before joining the architectural studio of Carl-Axel Acking. Although she initially focused on textile design, the Solfjädern chair became her most iconic contribution to Scandinavian furniture history. In 1952, the design received the prestigious Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, further establishing its international reputation. Since 1993, the model has continued to be produced by Gemla, confirming its enduring relevance and timeless appeal. This chair has been carefully restored in Italy by our workshop.
