Mid-Century Modern Danish Sofa By Alfred Christensen For Slagelse Møbelværk, 1940s

Chairish

$8,501

This rare and highly collectible Danish Modern two-seater sofa — designed by Alfred Christensen for Slagelse Møbelværk in the 1940s — is one of the most sculpturally refined expressions of mid-century Scandinavian cabinetmaking, presented here in new bouclé upholstery. The piece is immediately distinguished by its signature open curved armrests, hand-carved from solid stained beech, which sweep in a dramatic arc from the high backrest to the seat in one continuous, organic gesture. This distinctive looped arm construction is the defining hallmark of Alfred Christensen's seating vocabulary — simultaneously bold and refined — and sets his work apart from all lesser contemporaries. The gently flared backrest, generously proportioned seat, and elegantly tapered splayed beech legs give the form a floating, effortless quality wholly characteristic of the finest Danish craft output of the period. The upholstery is entirely new, professionally fitted in a warm cream bouclé — today the benchmark material for elevating mid-century Danish seating to the highest level of interior desirability. The tactile warmth of the bouclé is in perfect dialogue with the dark, hand-finished beech frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no official proof of authenticity, however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
