Story time! This pair of walnut one drawer nightstands was acquired out of home full of Widdicomb pieces designed by Robsjohn-Gibbings. When deciding to purchase the nightstands we recognized the overall design elements of the nightstands, the thick curved or rounded front edge, the circular wooden hand pull with a notch on the underside, even the way the back panel is affixed. However, we knew we had never seen this version of a Robsjohn-Gibbings nightstand with an upper drawer and shelf. We also noted that the joinery for the drawer front was different; not dovetailed. Additionally, the piece was not labeled. We suspect this is a one-off set created by a craftsman working on the production of Robsjohn-Gibbings pieces for Widdcomb. Why do we suspect this? Because we know from experience and history that some workers at the major furniture lines in Grand Rapids made pieces for their own homes or collections, pieces not meant for distribution and possibly not even sanctioned by their employer. Again, this is only an educated guess, but we wanted to share this information with you for consideration. Regardless, what a beautiful pair of nightstands. The set is in good vintage condition with a few minor scuffs or nicks to the finish. One dresser has a slight stain on the top, likely from a glass; see photograph. The other has an imperfection in the walnut veneer or panel to one side, appearing as a couple of white marks near the top of the panel, the marks do not appear to be chips but seem to be imperfections in the wood; see photographs. Please see all photographs for an overall representation of condition.
