This same light moulded plywood shell is also used in the S 220 Atelier chair, providing comfortable support. An integrated rocking mechanism, which can be locked with a lever, allows the seat inclination to be individually adjusted for even greater comfort. The chair is fully height-adjustable and available with (S 220 FDRW) or without (S 220 DRW) armrests. The version with bentwood armrests has an almost sculptural look that draws the eye. Soft castors, which are suitable for all types of flooring, glide under a swivel base made of either polished or deep black powdercoated aluminium. This latest addition to the family is a versatile piece that can be used in workspaces, home offices and hybrid working areas, as well as at kitchen tables or in children’s rooms. The established shape of the iconic 214 and 209 bentwood chairs served as inspiration for the design by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin of Industrial Facility: the S 220 is a material-efficient, stackable moulded plywood chair with an ergonomic seat shell and a light tubular steel frame. Featuring optional armrests, the chair can be used in a variety of settings – from private homes to the contract sector – and is available in a range of different woods and colours. The chair’s design pushes the limits of what is technically possible using the material of moulded plywood, which has always been a driver of innovation at Thonet. The S 220 has an understated organic form as well as precise lines, and its moulded plywood shell is comfortable and supportive. The chair’s elegant hourglass shape means that the seat shell has just the right amount of give. A smoothly rounded front edge perfectly embodies the harmonious interplay of material quality, aesthetics and functionality that is so characteristic of the S 220. This “waterfall edge”, as the designers call it, avoids pressure points, makes the chair more comfortable and picks up the radii of the tubular steel frame.
