Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen is credited with introducing modern architecture to Denmark in the 1930s when he designed the Daells Varehus department store in Copenhagen. That led to the commission for the first Copenhagen airport terminal and the broadcasting house Radiohuset, a pinnacle of Danish architecture that now houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Like many architects of his time, Lauritzen often designed furniture and lighting to complete his buildings, and it was for Radiohuset that he created the VL45 Pendant (1942). Intended to provide general illumination, the VL45 offers glare-free downward light combined with gentler ambient light through its opal glass diffuser.
