Originally used as a small fish pond, this vintage garden planter has the squat, barrel shape of traditional Chinese opera drums. The swelling sides are decorated in low relief with a molded design of trailing vines and peony blossoms, bordered at the top and bottom with imitation nail heads. The pot is flanked with two faux handles in the form of fu lions, or shizi, mythical creatures associated with balance and protection. Save for the rim, the planter is cloaked in a beautiful, dark-toned glaze that clings to the raised design to reveal shades of brown, purple and blue.
