Dutch Hindeloopen Rocking Chair

Chairish

$275

Hindeloopen, a charming city located in the northern province of Friesland, Netherlands, has been renowned for its unique handmade and painted furniture since 1894. The artistry of this furniture style is characterized by its authentic painting, which features numerous motifs and colors. Typically, the background is painted in one color, while the rest of the piece showcases flowers and leaves, animals, or biblical images. The hindeloop painting style dates back to the 17th century, but it only gained popularity after amateur painter Hendrik Lap revived the almost-lost art form during the first half of the nineteenth century. Dutch prosperity was threatened by economic decline during this time, prompting Lap to revive and promote this unique style of painting. The hindeloop art gained recognition after an exhibition in Friesland in 1877, where several museums began collecting it. The exhibition featured paintings of hindeloopen interiors, which were likely based on Lap's work, and were later displayed at the 1878 World Exhibition in Paris. In 1920, a hindeloopen company was established, preserving the hindeloopen painting tradition. Today, eight companies continue to produce this traditional art form, ensuring that the legacy of hindeloopen furniture lives on in the Netherlands and beyond.
