An eight panel Chinese coromandel lacquer screen depicting a garden courtyard scene of guests bearing gifts arriving for a garden function honoring a central seated matriarch. The top frieze composed of renderings of auspicious and precious objects known as “antiquities.” The bottom frieze is composed of eight mythological creatures in a woodland landscape. VERSO: The top frieze again depicting various antiquities; the center field composed of birds, foliage, and flowers; the bottom frieze with depictions of individual plant species.
