Three majestic cypresses—ancient symbols of everlasting life and the uplifting of the human spirit—stand as sentinels against a landscape pulsing with energy. The foreground, crisscrossed with meandering red and white lines, suggests the heat and vitality of a high-summer meadow, lending the piece a spirited, abstract feel. It is a work that captures the 'healing powers' of the arboreal world, where the cycle of birth and renewal is rendered in a riotous, joyful palette.Bulurbaft, the most ‘classical’ design carpets, are woven in the province of Kurdistan. ‘Bulur’ is Farsi for ‘brilliant’ or ‘precise’, an apt definition for these finely woven carpets that are similar to traditional Bijar carpets in quality and weave. The designs draw inspiration from old Senneh carpets, but refreshed and updated the colour palette to suit modern sensibilities. The Luribaft carpets are knotted by Luri tribesmen or by Ghashgha’i women married into the tribe. The designs are passed down from generation to generation or are recreated using ancient Luri ornaments as templates, since some archaic motifs had vanished from their repertoire. Until the 1950s the Luri tribes worked exclusively with vegetable dyes. The emergence of chemical dyes, mainly from Germany, made it easier to dye wool, but led to a loss of the intrinsic character of these fine carpets. In the 1980s Zollanvari forced a return to the ancient vegetable dyeing techniques and thereby revived the allure of these carpets.
