The Uilas Noche rug is an extraordinary design using traditional Colombian materials and techniques to create a modern jewel. Like the Uilas Rugs, this series is created by designer Mae Engelgeer who was inspired for this edition by the stories about the legendary gold country "El Dorado" and Colombia’s night sky: black dyed fique fibers and natural virgin wool are interspersed with shiny metal threads in copper, silver, and gold. In contrast to the coarse, dark natural fibers, the shimmering yarns give the rug its lush effect. The design is available in three sizes that will add a fascinating texture to any room. Each rug is woven by hand in production facilities in the provinces Santander and Boyacá. In both regions exists a long tradition of working with fibers that are made from the leaves of the fique plant. For this rug, our artesanos and artesanos combine these natural fibers with dyed wool threads and fine metal threads to create an asymmetrical piece. The preparation of the raw materials alone takes up to five days and the weaving and braiding of the rug take between 20 to 30 days, depending on the size of the final rug. Dutch designer Mae Engelgeer felt always drawn to textiles – from her school days through her studies at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute to her Masters in applied art at the Sandberg Instituut. Since opening her studio in 2013, she has been driven by her interest in traditional craft techniques. Using yarns, colors, patterns, and fabrics, she pushes the boundaries of textile production to adapt old techniques for the modern-day. Mae Engelgeer’s signature style combines subtle color palettes, patterns, and linear elements.
