Red Sea Rya Rug For Marks Rya, 1959

Chairish

$419

“Red Sea” rya rug produced by Marks Rya, Sweden, 1959. Hand-knotted in wool, the rug is defined by a dense and richly structured pile characteristic of Swedish rya production of the late 1950s. The composition is built around a saturated field of red tones — ranging from deeper maroon to more vivid, almost crimson accents — softened by areas of cream. The surface is developed through gradual chromatic transitions rather than sharply defined motifs, giving the rug a sense of depth and movement. Variations in pile height and density contribute to a pronounced tactile quality, allowing the material to respond subtly to light and viewing angle. Measuring 201 × 116 cm, with an approximate thickness of 1.5 cm, the rug has a balanced and versatile format while maintaining a strong visual presence. The construction reflects traditional craftsmanship, with the underside revealing the hand-knotted structure. The piece remains in very good vintage condition, showing only minor, even wear consistent with age and use. A characterful example of mid-century Swedish rya design, where colour and material combine into a cohesive and visually expressive composition. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs, designer records, or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
