Rhizomes cobble stone Tabac hand knotted rug by Charlotte CulotEdition: 8SignedDimensions: 63 x 223 cmMaterials: Silk, wool, linen, alloHand knotted.During a visit to Château La Coste in 2018 Charlotte Culot was inspired by a strikingly modern woven tapestry designed by Le Corbusier. She was there to see the Etel Adnan exhibition whose writing she admires, and when she realised that this artist too had had some of her compositions woven as tapestries by Aubusson, her desire to transpose her works into carpets was confirmed. This serendipitous encounter convinced Charlotte Culot to follow her new creative vision, enriching an artistic career that began with painting in 1990. This project of “woven colour” came to life when she met the colour specialist and director of textile collection, Perrine Blaise, who coordinated the adaption of the paintings, the transposition of the colours and advised on the choice of production atelier. The weavers are Nepalese, chosen for their skill in interpreting demanding designs. With hand-spun Tibetan wool, silk and linen, and meticulously rendered dyes, the collection of hand-knotted carpets Rhizomes Tapis d’artiste has been brought to fruition. A long creative chain linking, plant, animal and human, with a global and spiritual aura that is a founding principal of Charlotte’s work. The first carpet was shown at the Château de Vogüé in the summer of 2018 as part of the Couleurs exhibition. Magnificently displayed in the chateau’s Stateroom, the carpet was hung vertically like a wall tapestry, reflecting its nascence in Charlotte’s paintings. Each design is limited to eight examples, some vividly coloured works of the artist have been voluntarily transposed with a subtle palette of white tones punctuated with grey and black. Others reflect the strong collages of startling tones, emblematic of Charlotte Culot’s work.
