Brand: ClassiConModel: L'Art Noir RugDesigner: Eileen Gray (1920-1935)Type: RugEileen Gray not only created some of the most iconic furniture of the 20th century, but also ran her own studio in which rugs were developed directly from her designs. Some of her most refined textile works are preserved today in the ClassiCon rug collection, among which L'Art Noir stands out as a profound synthesis of art, color theory and modernist thinking. The L'Art Noir rug originates from a creative phase in which Gray-under the influence of movements such as the Bauhaus-explored minimalism, symbolic geometry and material honesty. A series of original gouaches depicting the circular composition reveal her deep investigation into the psychological impact of color. By varying the proportion of black within different hues and juxtaposing them within a segmented circle, Gray developed a visual language she described as "black art," a concept that gave the rug its name. One of these color studies served as the direct template for the hand-knotted rug produced by ClassiCon. The design is defined by four concentric circles, each composed of two contrasting color halves, creating a balanced yet dynamic composition. The palette evokes the stormy sea, pale sand and gentle coastal vegetation, lending the rug a distinctly atmospheric quality.Originally placed in Eileen Gray's legendary Villa E1027 on the Côte d'Azur, L'Art Noir functioned as a powerful design accent, contributing decisively to the villa's timeless modernity. Today, it remains a striking example of Gray's ability to merge artistic experimentation with functional design. The rug is made of 100% fine New Zealand virgin wool, hand-spun and hand-knotted using the Tibetan knot technique, with a density of 80 knots per square inch (6.45 cm²). Environmentally friendly color pigments are used, tested in accordance with OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. The rug is low-maintenance and suitable for vacuum cleaners. Production takes place in collaboration with M2Rugs, following the fair trade standards of Label STEP.Natural materials combined with traditional handcrafted techniques ensure that each rug possesses its own unique character. Slight color variations and dimensional tolerances of ±5 cm are inherent to the artisanal process.Dimensions:Diameter: 200 cmDiameter: 78.7 in
