Stalagmite in Red 1 is a rectangular wool rug.‎The word stalagmite comes from the Greek stalagmites, which means ‘dropping, trickling’.‎ A stalagmite is a tapering column rising from the floor of a cave, formed of calcium salts deposited by dripping water.‎ This Dream Chants Collection design by Zollanvari Studio fuses a natural phenomenon with Spatialism founded by the painter, sculptor and theorist, Lucio Fontana, adding horizontal lines resonant of Aboriginal ‘Songlines’ that describe the directions of travel that were included in a song that travellers needed to memorise to know the route to their destination – true ‘cross-cultural’ art.‎The circle is considered a symbol of unity and also infinity, without beginning or end, the ultimate geometric symbol.‎ As Ralph Waldo Emerson put it: “The eye is the first circle; The horizon which it forms is the second; and throughout nature this primary figure is repeated without end – a veritable metaphor for nature.‎” The fundamental characteristic of Art Nouveau is the asymmetrically undulating line, with a dynamic and energetic ending resembling a spearhead.‎ Combine this with the significance of circles in Aboriginal art and you have a cultural fusion rug design par excellence.‎
