Swedish Hand Knotted Leaf Patterned Rya Rug, 1950s

Chairish

$538

Swedish Hand-Knotted Rya Rug with Leaf Motif, 1950s A highly expressive Swedish rya rug from the 1950s, distinguished by a bold, semi-figurative leaf motif rendered with a strong, almost drawn contour line. The composition unfolds across a richly modulated ground, where fields of moss green, deep red, and earthy brown tones create both depth and movement. Unlike more restrained geometric rya weavings, this piece carries a distinctly illustrative quality — the central leaf form appears almost sketched into the pile, giving the rug a graphic presence that reads as both textile and image. The variation in pile height and density softens transitions between colours, while preserving the clarity of the motif. Hand-knotted in wool, the surface has a tactile richness typical of mid-century Scandinavian rya, with a structure that balances softness and definition. The reverse reveals the traditional construction, confirming its handcrafted origin. Measuring 176 × 130 cm, with an approximate thickness of 1.5 cm, the rug functions equally well as a floor piece or as a wall-mounted textile, where the composition becomes even more pronounced and sculptural. The rug remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor wear consistent with age and use. A distinctive example of Swedish mid-century textile design — where traditional rya technique meets a more expressive, almost pictorial approach.
