Vintage Moroccan Tribal Area Rug, Hand-Knotted Wool, Geometric Design, 4' X 6'

Chairish

$3,900

This vintage Moroccan area rug from the third quarter of the 20th century achieves a rare and beautiful balance of minimalism and bold geometric expression that is characteristic of the finest North African Berber weaving. The striking open-field design with a small central medallion rests against a beautifully abrash aqua green background — the subtle tonal variations of natural vegetable dyes adding depth, texture, and a sense of quiet movement to the serene field. Framing the composition is a luminous saffron-yellow border richly decorated with bold geometric motifs in red, brown, and green — a vivid contrast of warm and cool tones that gives the piece a graphic energy while maintaining the meditative quality of the open field. The aqua green and saffron combination is both visually striking and unusually rare in Moroccan pile weaving. Moroccan Berber rugs carry one of the oldest and most culturally rich textile traditions in the world — woven by the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) people of the Atlas Mountains and surrounding regions for centuries, primarily by women who encoded the symbols, stories, and spiritual beliefs of their communities into every composition. Each rug is a unique expression of its maker's individual artistic voice within a tradition of remarkable depth and variety.
