1940s Mexican Modernist Flores Arias Hand-Carved Wooden Sculpture – Mother And Child

Chairish

$425

This striking 11" x 3 3/4" x 2 1/4" hand-carved wooden sculpture is an exceptional example of mexican modernist Flores Arias' signature style, depicting a mother and child with deeply emotive, solemn expressions. While the piece is unsigned, its craftsmanship and motif are unmistakably his. Originally mounted on a plinth that bore the artist’s name, the mount holes remain visible on the underside. Likely created between the 1940s and 1960s, this piece reflects the era in which Arias was most active, producing works that captured the essence of indigenous life with a modernist sensibility. His sculptures from this period are known for their elegant simplicity, strong form, and cultural depth. Arias’ work is celebrated for its raw yet refined execution, emphasizing indigenous themes and familial bonds. This sculpture remains in excellent condition, with a rich patina that beautifully reflects its age and history. A rare and compelling piece for collectors of Mexican folk art and mid-century wood sculpture.
