A beautiful pair of 19th century large carved wooden folk art European lions with wonderful patina. Possibly Italian or Spanish Colonial, and were used to flank and entryway. Some areas have a faded tempera or gesso style paint. This is an unusual male and female pair. Carved from a soft wood like pine these lions would have symbolized guardians and would have been at an estate or church. One lion has had some repairs made. There are flaws throughout that is to be expected with something of this age. One lion has a broken foot but still stands and there are weathered cracks throughout. Both lions fit together like puzzle pieces and will come disassembled but labeled.
