20th Century - Anatomical Plaster Hand Study

Chairish

$195

A strikingly sculptural anatomical hand study rendered in plaster, dated 1968 and signed D. Lautner to the verso. Cast in subtle relief, the piece showcases a dramatically veined and elongated right hand, likely intended as an academic or anatomical reference. The hand emerges expressively from its elliptical base, recalling 19th-century École des Beaux-Arts studio models or Grand Tour castings of master studies. The detailing is exquisite—each tendon, bone, and knuckle rendered with realism and anatomical precision. The patinated plaster surface adds historic depth, with a soft chalky hue throughout. A small chip to the bottom edge is present, consistent with age and prior handling. This work functions both as a sculptural object and as an artifact of mid-century academic practice—elevated by its bold, biomorphic presence and the rare signature on the reverse. Signed and Dated: D. Lautner 9/18/68 inscribed verso Dimensions: 16.5” H x 8” W x 2.5” D Condition: Good overall condition with minor surface wear; small chip to the bottom edge as shown. Structurally sound. Style: Mid-Century Academic / Anatomical Study / Brutalist Figural
