Antique Thai Ayutthaya Style Sandstone Head of Buddha on Metal Stand. Probably 18th–19th Century (estimated). An impressive antique Thai Ayutthaya-style sandstone head of Buddha, beautifully mounted on a custom black metal museum stand. Carved in sandstone and approaching life size, the sculpture displays the serene expression characteristic of Ayutthaya Buddhist imagery, with softly lowered eyes in meditation, gently smiling lips, elongated earlobes, and tightly defined snail-shell curls rising to the ushnisha. The graceful oval face reflects the elegant sculptural traditions associated with the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351–1767), whose artists drew inspiration from earlier Sukhothai and Indian Gupta prototypes. The calm expression, refined facial modeling, and rhythmic treatment of the hair exemplify the timeless qualities that have made Thai Buddhist sculpture highly sought after by collectors and interior designers alike. The warm sandstone has developed a beautiful natural patina through age, with expected weathering and surface wear that enhance its authenticity and sculptural presence. Displayed on its custom metal stand, the head makes an exceptional focal point for both traditional and contemporary interiors. Acquired from Alex Cooper Auctioneers in 2025.
