Art Deco Style Cat, 1920s-1940s, Bronze

Chairish

$1,825

This hand-cast bronze cat is a contemporary homage to the streamlined animal sculptures of the French Art Deco era. Its calm, seated pose is inspired by Jan & Joël Martel’s celebrated Chat assis (c. 1925), whose refined geometry and serene presence helped define interwar modernism in Paris. Materials & process Solid bronze, cast by the traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) method, then hand-chased and patinated to a deep dark brown. Within the period context, the sculpture also dialogues with contemporaries such as François Pompon, whose simplified animal forms (including cats and the famed polar bear) exemplify the era’s pursuit of pure volumes. Art Deco style; designed to sit harmoniously on consoles, mantels, or pedestals. Designer & production Design taking inspiration from French Art Deco masters Jan & Joël Martel (1896–1966). This work is “in the manner of” Martel’s Chat assis and is not an original Martel cast. Patina care: dust with a soft, dry cloth; avoid abrasives and chemical cleaners.
