Central African Carved Wood Ritual Male Figure

Chairish

$745

This standing male figure is a traditional African power or ancestral sculpture. The bared, pointed teeth and stylized open mouth are classic indicators of power or protection, expressing aggression toward evil spirits, protective vigilance, or link to a hunter's cult. The figure’s bulging, rounded segments on the biceps, forearms, and calves represent vital force, spiritual energy, and physical strength. And its symmetry, frontal posture and slightly bent knees allow the piece to stand independently and emphasize a meditative yet powerful presence. The torso features specific raised geometric markings and texturing just above a prominent navel. These markings can symbolize social status, lineage, and the transition into a complete, civilized adult. The back of the head shows a crest-like or braided hairstyle, historically indicative of social hierarchy or specialized hunters' societies. Sculptures of this scale and form generally functioned as ancestor figures or spiritual vessels. Kept in local shrines or by village chiefs, they were used by ritual practitioners to guard against malevolent forces, bring success to hunts, and serve as an active conduit between the human world and the ancestors—some things are universal.
