The WPA era artist Maxwell Starr was born in Odessa, the Russion Federation, in 1901. He spent most of his adult life in the US. and died in NY in 1966. He was best known for his extensive work creating murals in various parts of the country for the WPA. The murals reflected Starr’s interest in capturing the lives of typical Americans, especially workers, during the 1930’s - industrial workers, farmers, builders, entertainers, and artists. Themes of industry and social history are reflected in his sculptures and paintings. This sculpture depicts a seated musician playing a clarinet. He is most likely a jazz musician, full of movement as he twists his upper body. The figure is elongated, with long fingers, torso and feet. The modeling of the limbs and head and the naturalism of the rough surfaces contribute to the player’s presence as a living, breathing musician. Starr was a member of artists associations in the early to mid 20th century and he also taught art.His murals may be found in New York, North Carolina, Illinois, Texas and other states.
