This is a fine as found example of a hand carved wooden statue of Guanyin. This statue of Guanyin was first considered to bring the recently deceased to the pure land of Amitaba Buddha. The Chinese also recognized her in many other forms of their religion. These statues were placed in temples and prominent places in their homes and gardens. Her presents brought piece and protection to their surroundings. This carving is large, and very light in weight. Over time as the wood dries our the pieces become lighter. This usually tells us of some idea of age of the piece. We believe the piece to be early 19th century, but it could possibly be older. Some of the original paint seems to be missing, and it has never been repainted or touched up.
