Between 1940 and 1945, the Braques lived first in Limousin, then in the Pyrenees at Caujac, where they lodged their nephew Jacques Gosselin, and finally returned to Paris. They did not return to Varengeville until 1945. This work is dated 1945 and made from pink Pyrenean granite pebbles, and corresponds perfectly to this period. During this period, human sculptures were always heads in profile, as in ancient Egyptian reliefs, and this work is precisely in this spirit.
