This monumental antique Korean Buddha head is an arresting and deeply powerful sculptural presence, one that feels considerably larger and more commanding than its measurements suggest. Measuring approximately 17 inches high, the head conveys a quiet authority and meditative gravity rarely encountered outside of temple-scale works..At first glance, the form possesses a strikingly modern sensibility—bold volumes, simplified planes, and a serene abstraction—yet closer examination unmistakably reveals its antiquity. Most notable are the snail curls (ushnisha curls) crowning the head: each one individually sculpted and separately applied, an extraordinarily labor-intensive technique rarely preserved on this scale. Several curls are now missing, with visible evidence of their former placement, while the remaining examples show honest wear and age-softening consistent with centuries of devotion and exposure. I’ve dated the head to 18/19 century. It is possible that it could be 100 years old or less, though it is clearly an antique item. I have not. been able to find any comparable examples to use to help date it.The surface is covered in a beautiful, smooth, mellow patina, developed naturally over time and lending the sculpture a subdued, almost tactile warmth. The distinctively bulbous eyes, broad rounded head, and uniquely modeled nose give this Buddha an unforgettable presence unlike any other example.
