Monumental Early 20th Century Antique Art Nouveau Lady With Two Dogs Figurative Bronze Sculpture

Chairish

$16,000

About the artwork: This monumental bronze sculpture depicts a fancy young lady clad in an elegant gown that captures the essential elements of Edwardian charm - the high neck, puffed sleeves, nipped-in waist, and a sumptuously full sweep of skirt. She is flanked by two aristocratic borzoi hounds, their flowing coats, curvy silhouettes and chiseled heads synonymous with Russian royalty. This sculpture was cast entirely in a single piece of bronze. The dogs are patinated in gold and painted in gold and red. The lady’s dress has a raised floral pattern painted in gold on black and her face is patinated with a silver overlay. The figures stand on a bronze base decorated with painted grapes and other decoration. The artwork reflects the best of the Edwardian era and Art Nouveau style. The Edwardian era, from 1901 to 1910, was a time of great social and economic change that focused on luxury and refinement. Art Nouveau emerged from this period, a highly decorative style characterized by long, stylized and idealized shapes with organic forms used for decoration, as seen in this piece. The artwork is not signed yet obviously executed by a very accomplished sculptor. While the exact weight is unknown, it may approach 1000 pounds. This sculpture came from a Palm Beach estate, where it stood within a grand entrance to a mansion. Provenance: Private collection – New York Private collection – Palm Beach
