Monumental Prometheus Bound Relief By Alfred Pierre Noël Cazaubon, France C. 1940

Chairish

$18,500

Bold and monumental, this striking relief depicts the mythological figure Prometheus Bound, shown nude and kneeling with his arms chained to the rock. Sculpted by Alfred Pierre Noël Cazaubon, the work was likely conceived as an architectural element for a grand interior such as a public building, lobby, or institutional setting. Executed in gilt and enameled plaster over a substantial wood armature, the reverse reveals the robust construction supporting its impressive scale. Born in Pau, France, near the Pyrenees, Cazaubon later established his career in Paris, where he became recognized for his monumental figurative sculpture. He exhibited his acclaimed Water Bearer at the Salon d’Automne in 1929 and received awards at the Exposition Universelle (1930) and the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne. His work is represented in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris. The relief is signed "Cazaubon" along the lower edge and is presented on its original integrated plinth with painted wood base. France, circa 1940.
