Csaky was an exceptional and leading artist of the Parisian avant-garde. Some of his works are owned by French and Hungarian institutions, as well as galleries and private collections all-over the world. Some public collections include: Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Joseph Csaky was born on March 18, 1888 in Szeged, Hungary, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and died on May 1, 1971. Like many artists following their dreams including Brancusi in 1904, and Archipenko that same year as Csaky, in 1908, he moved to Paris to be with the French Avant Garde. He is called a Pioneer of Modern sculpture and was among the first to be part of the Cubist movement. He fought to disassociate himself form the conventionalism of his predecessors. In 1910 he exhibited at the Salon de la Societe Nationale des Beaux Art in Paris with his first cubist sculptures. In 1911 at the Salon d'Automne and the salon des Independants. He obtained a contract with gallery owner Daniel- Henry Kahnweiler and the famous Leonce Rosenberg and exhibited internationally along with Braque, Picasso, Gris, Leger, Gleizes, Laurens and Mondrian where he beguiled many patrons. He exhibited at Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1924. Being influenced by Maillol, circa 1928, he moved away from abstraction and produced figurative work in a return to a more representational style. During his life, he created works in a variety of mediums including, onyx, stone, bronze, rock crystal... In 1959 Csaky returned home to Hungary. As a commemorative, on his eightieth birthday, the Hungarian press published various articles on his art. In 1977 the Musee Bordelle in France had a tribute to the 1930s where three artists were chosen: Csaky, Gargallo, Lambert-Rucki. In 1980 the Musee Rodin had a tribute exhibition on Csaky of human forms.
