The sculpture is made of tree roots, stripped of the rough outer layer. Provinces in Southwest China, especially in Guangxi and Southern Yunnan have low mountain formations and of rock cliffs. These regions especially those under the jurisdiction of Minority People have interesting plant life, especially fast growing plants that grow all over the rocks. The natives harvest these interesting root sculptures. Their practice of harvesting tree roots has been strongly discouraged so the market today is not flooded with three roots for sale. This sculpture does stand on its own legs and has the most interesting knarly and knotty root growth. The sculpture has good height or if placed in a horizontal, it looked like a bird. On a closer look, there are variations of colors on the surface, and here and there are slivers of rock that were embedded into the tree root.
