Rustic Brutalist Owl Sculpture, France, 1970

Chairish

$2,789

One (of a pair) sculpture or wall hanging representing a stylized owl, Handcrafted, Brutalist, Tribal, Modern Rustic, Hippie, Seventies, composed of braided rope(s) of varying thickness and quality(s) mounted on a suspended wooden structure/branch, handmade by a French artist to be identified, unsigned, France 1970. This animal artwork, which can be hung on the wall, is characterized by its light and naive charm, its shimmering colors and materials, which give it a beautiful and highly decorative presence. Its "totemic" dimension brings it closer to primitive, rock, and tribal art, to which French decorative arts often refer by representing and magnifying nature's creatures and integrating them into modern living. This work can be likened to the rustic-modern works that reinterpreted traditional craft techniques and aesthetics, with a modern look and know-how, in the midst of the hippie return to nature period in France in the 1970s. This major movement in French decorative arts was long minimized because it was in opposition to the "modernist", progressive, technological and urban movements, which were particularly publicized at the time, and recently relayed by many galleries. This rural or "modern" rustic trend was popularized by many artists such as Charlotte Perriand, Jean Touret and Les Artisans de Marolles, Roger Capron, etc.
