Sculpture, stone sculpture representing a protective eye.Dating from the Hellenistic and Roman eras, and with varying degrees of precision, ex-voto sculptures from Cyprus are commonly described as anatomical, depicting arms, legs, toes, fingers, male and even female genitalia, as well as eyes. Votive offerings are objects imbued with symbolism that are made as offerings to the gods. These were often accompanied by wishes and prayers, or more precisely, vows. The eye shown here was sculpted to fulfil a wish for healing.Depending on the style used by the sculptor, and the reason for the representation of this single eye, we can imagine that the absence of a pupil evokes the loss of sight and the wish of a soul in pain to regain it.Material: Sandstone H: 27.5 cm, W: 25.50 cm, D: 10 cmWeight: 3.4 kg
