Venetian Artist, Saint Michael The Archangel, Late 17th Century, Polychrome Wood

Chairish

$3,417

An interesting polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the winged Archangel Michael defeating the devil, skillfully carved by a Venetian sculptor between the 17th and 18th centuries. The polychrome work is relatively well preserved despite its age and is of excellent pictorial quality, still displaying vivid colors. The motifs include red for the cloak, gold leaf for the armor, and green, alternating with gold, for the hem of the saint's tunic. Other lacquers characterize the flesh tones and other details of the figures, while maintaining a certain naturalistic fidelity to the composition. Equally beautiful is the figure of the devil, agonized by the pain of his defeat. Cleaning the sculpture has highlighted the very well-preserved polychrome work and gilding, highlighting in particular the quality of the execution of the faces and the smallest details. The colors are original and have not been repainted. The height is 40 cm.
