The young woman's face, framed by a headscarf tied at the nape of her neck and locks of wavy hair, is captured in an extraordinarily spontaneous and lively expression, characterized by a realistic smile showing teeth and a dynamic, intense gaze. The work rests on a baluster-shaped base turned from dark material. This subject was created in the late 19th century, approximately in the 1880s in Naples. Stylistically, the sculpture fits squarely into Italian Verismo, a movement that Gemito profoundly influenced by portraying the faces of ordinary people and street children with extreme naturalness and psychological sensitivity.
