A fine Dogon bronze horseman and equestrian figure from Mali. Horses were rare amongst the Dogon people and considered a status symbol reserved for the elite. This bronze depicts a skilled rider atop a horse with an elegantly elongated face. Crafted using the lost wax method, each piece is a true original. The process begins with a beeswax model, which is then encased in layers of fine clay with wax rods attached. When heated, the wax melts away, leaving a cavity. Molten bronze is poured into this mold, and once cooled and hardened, the mold is broken away—ensuring no two pieces are identical.
