Vintage: C.1939-50's Original Max Kerlow, terra-cotta clay pottery "Mother & Child," Sculpture. There is a harlequin glaze in multiple of lavender, violet and amethyst and purple colorations, including Geometric concentric circles, overall body finish is poky-chrome with detailed scratch-coat textural aspects, hand done by the artist on the corresponding geometric and harlequin shaped design motif, as well as in the face, hair and throughout the sculpture. At first glance this sculpture has an ethnic, Mexican, Mayan, Adobe Indian Influence , but also elements of folk art at it's best, but strong Cubist elements, given the time and height of popularity of this Movement and it's influences Max Kerlow was an American Artist, who had moved and lived in Mexico. There is a naivety and an innocence to this piece, but stylized. Signed at the left foot/ankle area as last image indicates. No chips or breaks to sculpture, the "only,' thing we can see that has wear is to the front knee areas, where the finish shows the terra-cotta coming thru, otherwise great. Felted base bottom in area, placed by previous owner, to protect from any nicks or chips. Well maintained for era. Au current artist from the 90's- has similar influencial details and a nod to with whimsy is Tom Otterness, as one who can recall the NYC Subway System and Manhattan series of his sculptures scattered throughout Manhattan, subways, walkways etc..
