Whimsical Large Southeast Asian Antique Thai Indonesian Balinese Carved Polychrome Wood Rabbit Figure Sculpture
Chairish$3,111
A large, charming and whimsical hand carved and painted antique Southeast Asian wooden figural hare statue with incised detailing, rich polychrome decoration and beautifully aged warm dark patina. Hand-carved in the early 20th century, most likely originally commissioned as an architectural ornament from a Buddhist temple in Thailand, Indonesia, or Bali. We were immediately drawn to this charming figural rabbit statue, modeled in a reclining posture, head lifted up, ears back and a large tail, having hand painted polychrome decoration, featuring red, green and yellow highlights, that stands out beautifully on the dark blue ground. Hollowed space on bottom, we believe this was most likely a auspicious decorative architectural element mounted atop a post, rail or column. With its contrasting colors and lively attitude, this wonderful example will make for a great decorative addition to any home or children's bedroom, sure to add whimsical elegance, rustic warmth, and rich cultural interest! Provenance / Acquisition: Personal property of Genshiro Kawamoto. A Japanese real estate billionaire and avid art collector who owned numerous multi-million dollar propertys in Hawaii and was building one of the most expensive homes in Hawaii at the time of his tax evasion arrest and subsequent deportation. Prior to his purchase, we were told the carving was prominently displayed in a Maui hotel lobby. We acquired it from a well known antiques dealer and shop owner in Maui, Hawaii in 2020. Dimensions: 20" Long, 7" Wide, 10" High. A museum quality example, in great original antique condition, with nicely aged patina over the whole. Wear consistent with age and use.
