This was built by a team of the Worlds Finest Master Craftsmen It was built on virtually unlimited budget It was built under the order of Henry Ford ( at the time one of the world's wealthiest & most powerful men To say this desk is "finely made" is an understatement , truly a work of art Henry Longfellow is a Famous American Poet , American Classics . He was extremely popular during his lifetime 1807-1882 This desk featured here is based directly on Longfellows Writing Desk , believed he wrote many of his most famous poems sitting at the original desk , served as a Professor at Harvard College After his death in 1882, his estate was sold to a collector , who later sold the Estate to Henry Ford As the Ford Motor Company grew into one of the Worlds most successful companies Henry Ford became incredibly wealthy able to buy anything he wanted Ford started a Museum -The Edison Institute and began amassing and showcasing one of the most impressive collections of fine furniture the world had ever seen When Ford had the opprtunity to buy the Longfellow Estate , he jumped at the Opportunity, and in that deal he acquired the Original Longfellow desk Ford fell in love with the Desk , it's Beauty and Fine Craftsmanship ..Historical Significance and knew it was an Important piece of history After staying in his collection , he decided to do something to make sure the legacy of this desk and H.W. Longfellow would live on into the future Ford Commissioned The Worlds Finest Craftsmen In the early 1930's Ford decided to have 10 .... Yes only 10 , escuisite copies of H.W's Original Desk made. He wanted "Authentic Reproductions" and he wanted them made by the finest Furniture makers in the world With these goals in mind , Ford Commsioned the Colonial ManufacturingCompany of Zeeland, Michigan The Colonial Manufacturing was known for having the most skilled fine furniture craftsmen , many of whom were Dutch Immigrants . These Dutch immigrants had a legacy of skill in crafting fine furniture . They employed specialized techniques that were shared through generations of furniture makers The Colonial Manufacturing Company agreed to make these special " Authentic Reproductions " individually one piece at a time , employing their most talented craftsmen , Ford was the inventor of the modern assembly line One of the most intriguing features about the desk is the large (removable) secret compartments consisting of 4 drawers The Brass Hardware was cast & engraved from the original hardware In 1930's Henry Ford licensed them exclusively to manufacture an authentic reproduction "a line-for-line copy" of the finest pieces in his collections These museum copies are extremely Rare because they were made in very small numbers and every single piece comes with the museum certification .
