Late 19th Century American Side-By-Side Secretary Desk

Chairish

$550

This antique American "Side-by-Side" secretary desk and curio cabinet dates from the late Victorian to early Edwardian era (circa 1890s–1910s). Popularized by manufacturers like the Larkin Soap Company, this multi-functional unit is crafted from solid oak and features a dark, rich wood finish. Visual and Structural Features The Left Section: Features a tall, rectilinear glass-front display door that opens to multiple interior shelves for books or china. The Right Section: Includes a drop-front (slant-front) desk compartment embellished with an organic, carved floral or acanthus motif on the outer panel. The desk opens downward to reveal specialized mail cubbies and pigeonholes. Beneath the desk sits a single utility drawer with classic metal pulls, positioned over a lower solid-wood storage cupboard. The Top Framework: The unit is crowned by asymmetrical decorative woodcarvings. A stylized, leaf-carved crest anchors the top-left bookcase, while an ornate bonnet crown on the right frames a small, vertical beveled-glass mirror. The Base: The entire structure rests on shaped, slightly curved cabriole or plinth-style accent feet.
