For your consideration, we present a stunning antique folk art spool corner shelf, also historically classified as a Victorian "whatnot" shelf or étagère. Dating from the late 19th century to the early 20th century (circa 1880s–1910s), this style of furniture emerged alongside the Industrial Revolution. The widespread adoption of mechanized sewing machines created a massive influx of empty, mass-produced wooden thread spools in American households. Resourceful home woodworkers and folk artists upcycled these leftover spools by stacking them over metal rods or wooden dowels to serve as the decorative, turned-style legs for handmade shelves. This piece features four triangular dark-stained tiers braced by three stacked-spool supports, designed to slide seamlessly into the corner of a room to display small curiosities. Hang to the wall using the metal hook attached at the top, or sit on a tabletop. The stained finish has a pleasing patina and aged texture. Unsigned.
