Known as an étagère in France, this highly ornate wall bracket was hand-carved in oak. Dating to the 1700s, this is a period Louis XV piece, as evidenced by the asymmetrical Rococo motifs influenced by nature. The main body consists of a series of C-scrolls and gadrooned leaves, with shallow striations, giving the imagery added depth and texture. At the bottom of the tapered main body is a flower surrounded by scrolling tendrils arranged asymmetrically. The serpentine ledge, which is intended to support decorative items such as clocks, small statues, or ceramic vases, follows the dramatic curves of the main body below, giving the entire etagere a highly fluid form. Accentuated by a rich, dark brown patina, this Rococo wall bracket would make a wonderful addition to just about any room of the house; however, the size (20 ¼ inches tall) makes it a perfect option for a smaller area, such as a hallway, bathroom, or landing.
