AL-01 Shelf by Orlando PippigDimensions: W 31 x D 34 x H 135 cm (Dimensions may vary slightly)Materials: AluminumAluminum is often regarded as a cold, unwelcoming material. Its utilitarian nature plays into this general assessment, however I feel quite the opposite towards it. Aluminum is ever changing, evolving throughout the day, registering/reflecting various light sources. These reflections change from each viewpoint, almost giving the material the illusion of life. During the day its silver hues pierce the interior environment, then in the evening under warm light the material absorbs the warm tones cast from surrounding light sources, transforming into an intriguingly rich, radiant glow. Setting the tone for the AL series as a whole, AL-01 has been boiled down to its most minimal self, placing focus on the visual and physical offset of thin plate material with large flat planes, and the use of fastener connections, both reoccurring themes in the series. AboutOrlando Pippig is a self taught furniture / object designer currently living and working in New York City. For the last 8 years, he’s been designing and fabricating high end furniture, centered around solid wood and metal. In 2020 he opened his own studio. His personal designs are rooted in visual simplicity that’s driven by form, with a strong focus on highlighting specific materials. Drawing inspiration from many sources; nature, sculpture, industrial environments, architecture, he finds ways to mesh these separate sources into singular expressions. His work is influenced by systematic iteration, working individual concepts into multiple designs to create a linear progression. The design process favors an engineering approach, the goal of fully understanding connection methods and how to best implement. These thinking patterns result in furniture that holds superior strength and a genuine form.
