19th Century Italian Table with Carved Female Sphinxes and Lions – Octagonal TopA highly detailed hand-carved table from Italy, circa 1850–1880. This rare piece blends mythological iconography with masterful woodwork. The base features three female sphinxes — mythical creatures with a woman’s head and bust seamlessly merging into lion bodies. Their hair, faces, and feline limbs are beautifully sculpted with remarkable precision. Beneath them sit three fully carved lions, each rendered in the round with manes, paws, and expressive features. The octagonal tabletop is decorated with a fine checkerboard inlay of warm-toned wood veneer squares, framed by a shaped edge.Note: the top shows visible signs of wear, scratches, and some surface damage (see photos), consistent with age and use.Dimensions:Height: 74 cm (29 inches)Diameter: 70 cm (27.5 inches)Origin: ItalyPeriod: Mid to late 19th centuryMaterial: Solid carved walnutStyle: Neorenaissance / EclecticCondition:Structurally solidOriginal patina retainedSurface wear and marks on the top due to ageA rare statement piece for collectors of mythological design, fine European furniture, or neoclassical sculpture.
