Antique Side Table With Curved Legs, 1890s

Chairish

$480

A small side table in Baroque style, crafted around 1900 in the style of the 18th century. The strongly curved legs and the compact, highly proportioned construction lend the piece a slender and elegantly enclosed appearance. Historical Context: Small side tables and gueridons have been an integral part of formal living spaces since the 18th century, serving as flexible surfaces for candlesticks, vases, or small decorative objects. Around 1900, such forms were revived as part of historicist movements and produced with solid craftsmanship, often as an addition to existing parlor and ladies' room furnishings. Features: Four distinctly curved, freestanding legs with carved details at the top; rectangular base as an additional shelf between the legs. Design: The table's form is based on Baroque terminology with pronounced curves and sculptural leg reliefs. The construction combines a simple frame with dynamically arranged legs, creating a striking contrast between the flat tabletop and the dynamic base. Function: In the past, such a table served as a movable surface in parlors or ladies' rooms, for example for chandeliers or small household items. Today, it is suitable as a side table next to an armchair, as a plant stand, or as a compact storage unit in the entryway. Dimensions in cm: Height 79 / Width 53 / Depth 44 / Platform surface: 47x39. Material and condition: Oak, dark stained and varnished. Very good condition for its age with few signs of wear, sturdy construction, tested and stable.
