A fine and rare early 18th-century baroque side table, circa 1700–1730. The table is distinguished by its extraordinarily decorative removable top panel, veneered with a bold chess board pattern in two contrasting fruitwoods, a set within a border of richly figured burr veneer, accented at each corner with a cast gilt brass oak leaf appliqué. The edge of the panel features an elaborate multi-wood banding in alternating strips of cherry, rosewood, ebonised wood and boxwood, demonstrating the exceptional skill of the maker. the apron is veneered in richly figured rosewood with a continuous light fruitwood stringing following the shaped, scalloped lower edge. The four elegant cabriole legs are carved in solid fruitwood and terminate in characteristic hoof feet, typical of central european baroque cabinetmaking. dimensions: h 80 x w 78 x d 58 cm origin: central europe, circa 1700–1730 material: fruitwood (cherry), rosewood and burr veneer, multi-wood edge banding, gilt brass oak leaf appliqués, solid fruitwood cabriole legs with hoof feet style: baroque condition: very good antique condition, minor age-consistent wear, removable top panel fully functional
